Are my sinks, showers, and toilets all part of
the same drainage system?

Because our pipes are usually under our homes and pretty much out of sight, many people wonder if all of their drains go to the same place.  The answer is yes--but different--depending on where exactly your home is located.

Suburban Communities (Like St. Petersburg, Clearwater)

In suburban communities, most home drains lead to the home's main sewer line, which goes to the city tap at the street.  As shown below, everything drains to the same place.

Rural Communities
In areas outside of the city or commuities without a public sewer system, drain fields are used.  For more information on drainfields, click here.

Should I use chemicals to clear my drain clog?

Before we answer this question, let us say that drain clogs can be a serious matter.  Especially in older homes in St. Petersburg or Clearwater, Florida, a plumbing contractor like Petrovic Plumbing can help you decide on the best course of action.

Absolutely NOT
Drain cleaning products will only cause more harm than good.  Especially in homes with older drainage systems that are made with cast iron pipes.  In addition, using chemicals may cause damage to the finish of your sink and tub.
